Monsoon Mike's Cardboard Tiki Bar
After Christmas 2019 my wife and I had a ton of cardboard boxes leftover. So did all of our friends and family. Frustrated by so much waste, we decided to take it and upcycle it into a cool space in our garage.
We settled on a Tiki Bar. Being big fans of Trader Sam's at Disneyland, we wanted our bar to be filled with all sorts of magic and special effects.
Soon COVID lockdowns hit and gave us plenty of time to work on it. Our garage was quickly filled with a mess of cardboard.
Slowly the cardboard started to look like something with the help of our little kids.....
The walls were all framed up with wood I already had or walls left over from previous Halloweens.
One of the first thing we built was an 8 foot tall tiki mountain (out of cardboard) with projection mapped lava and a fire illusion in its mouth.
There is also a window where we can project a wide variety of scenery. We tore up green t-shirts we bought at goodwill to act as most of the foliage.
There are also a number of cardboard tiki masks. One of which has an iPad hidden in its face to allow for eye and mouth movement like the totems from the Tiki Room at Disneyland.
There is a wall that looks like part of a shipwreck with water ripples and fish shadows projected on it. You might even catch a glimpse of a shark swimming by.....
I turned my work table and some storage shelves into the bar and the bar shelves
And finally....a light up cardboard marquee
Here a couple more good photos...
